The Heene Family
Three days after the nation watched mesmerized as the televised image of a silver flying saucer-shaped balloon travel across the Colorado sky, it turns out the saga of the balloon boy was all hot air.
Larimer County, Colo., Sheriff Jim Alderden told reporters Sunday the "balloon boy hoax" is real. "It has been determined this was a hoax," said Alderden, who says no arrests have been made yet and won't until the investigation is complete.
The Heene family, who spoke to investigators Saturday, may be charged with two class four felonies, including conspiracy and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
In the meantime, Alderden says protective services will look into whether or not the children should be removed from the home.
Alderden said the hoax was hatched more than two weeks ago by either one or both Richard and Mayumi Heene, the parents of 6-year-old Falcon, who was believed to have been inside the hot air balloon that escaped the backyard of the family's Fort Collins home, to get on a reality TV show. Authorities are also investigating whether others are involved.
The sheriff issued a search warrant on the Heene home Saturday night and recovered computers, video equipment and financial records.
The Heene family, who were locked out of their home during the search and spent the night with a neighbor, returned at 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning and left an hour later.
