What they don't mention in the article are the possible effects of an asteroid even coming close to Earth. The planet's ocean and entire ecosystem are pretty reliant on the gravitational fields that it currently maintains. The one generated by the Earth and the one generated by the moon. If something were to come close enough to disrupt those gravitational fields with its own, as any body in space would have, the results could be almost as catastrophic. See...I knew watching way too much History Channel would pay off one day.
